There are many things you can do that will make you successful. I have picked out five things you need to do to be successful. New year, new you!

1. Find out what you want to accomplish and write it down

If you do not know what you want to accomplish, no one else is going to tell you what it is. You have to find out what you really want to do with your life. What is it that you like to do? What changes do you want to make this year? What did you like about the previous year? What did you not like about the previous year? If you could go back in time what would you do differently? These kind of questions prepare you for whatever it is you are trying to accomplish.

You have to visualize what it is you want to be. If you cannot begin to visualize it, then you’re making it more difficult for yourself to possibly achieve it. The power of visualization is given to everyone, but it only helps those who choose to use it. You must use the power of visualization to picture where you see your organization or business in the next year or three years from now. Where do you see yourself three years from now? What would you like to accomplish this year? If you knew what you know now, how would you spend your 2016? Take the baby out of the bath water! In other words, take the lessons you learned in the year of 2016 to make this new year of 2017 extraordinary. Dare to be phenomenal!

2. Set your own routine

Whether you take action or not they are both actions. Planning is the most important part of a task. Most people struggle with not the task itself, but planning for it. The majority of people today spend time doing unproductive things. This is not a time management issue, but instead, it is a time organizational issue. How to organize your time is always the first step to winning your goal.

Take a blank sheet of paper and design it like a planner. Mark the dates from Monday through Sunday and write down in summary of what you would like to do every two hours of each and every day. If you have work, that helps you to fill out the planner quicker. You then only have to worry about how you are going to spend your time outside of work. For students, write down your classes, study time and library time. Do not forget to give yourself free time!

This step alone helped me when I was a poor college kid with bad grades to graduating college with good grades and a good sense of direction of where I am going with my life. It worked for me and continues to work for me. It can work for you too.

3. Do the uncomfortable and believe in the process

When you make your calendar, the best use of it is trying to follow it as much as you can. You have to do the uncomfortable even when you don’t feel like it. You have to believe in the process of mastering the small stuff before you move on to the next. You must be willing to force yourself to do that which might seem to be boring or difficult.

There are times that you are going to feel like dying. There are also times where you are going to feel rejuvenated and ready to go. Both times are good times to help us grow. You must seek to live life to your fullest potential no matter what circumstances you might face.

4. Feed your mind, body and spirit

There is one saying that says, “There is no gardening book that will teach you to plant lilies in the desert or a cactus in the swamp.” No one is going to tell you that success will ever be on sale. No book will teach that success will be on discount during Black Friday or on new years. Success is not something you pursue for a specific time. Success is a lifestyle. You might be successful too. As long as you are happy with what you’re doing and making a difference for those around you then success is on the tip of your fingers.

However, I wish I could tell you that as long as you dream you are going to be successful. Successful people are those who dream and turn their dream into a goal and do whatever necessary to achieve it.

Just like a garden needs a gardener, your goal needs a goal getter. You must be willing to feed your mind, body and soul! You must learn how to take care of yourself. What does it mean to feed your mind? Read self-help books and obtain as much information as possible to help you accomplish your goal.

Your dream will never become a reality if you don’t do the work. You must feed your body. Exercise, exercise, exercise! I cannot say it enough. The majority of people are not in the shape they wish to see themselves in. Now that is as sad as a starving fat child in America.

You must discipline yourself to work out. Whether you go for a run, jumprope, or walk inside your house for 30 minutes every day, it is all on you. Do not depend on anyone else to work out for you. Your body feels good and you function better as a person when you exercise, end of story.

5. Give yourself a reward even when no one else does

Reward yourself no matter what! When I began my senior year of college, I told myself I would gift a trip to New York City when I graduated. To make a long story short, I was able to graduate and made a trip to New York, a city that does not sleep, motivated me to do my homework assignments. I was able to go to New York earlier this month in December. I also was able to do some other traveling as an inspirational speaker and a digital marketer.

In the month of December, I visited six different states! I had a blast and learned so much. I cannot wait to give myself rewards for the effort I am about to put forth during this upcoming year of 2017. You can do it too! Life without vision is like walking into the darkness without a light. When you believe in yourself, good things happen.

The African proverb states it best, saying, “If there is no enemy within, the enemy outside can do you no harm.”

Born in the small African country, Burundi, Wilson Kubwayo is now an inspirational speaker and talks to diverse audiences about his theme, “Climbing the Walls of Greatness: How to live life to your fullest potential.”
